Take the "Flyaway" bus from LAX to union station in downtown LA. Then hop aboard the Amtrak bus to Bakersfield. No reservations needed for the flyaway, but you might want to bus the Bakersfield bus ahead of time.

I'd go for the easiest route as mentioned by travelmaster. The Airport Bus of Bakersfield operated by Coach America. They have several direct departures a day and the fare while a little pricy is well worth the saving in time.

There is a Bakersfield bus that runs from LAX directly to Bakersfield. When you arrive check with any Travelers Aid Booth. They are located close to the baggage claim area and have schedules. They run about every 3 hours or so.
